NFU Energy, in partnership with the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), has launched a new TNUoS Charge Impact Calculator to help businesses understand how forthcoming changes to electricity transmission charges could affect their energy bills.
The tool aims to support business, particularly in the agricultural sector, where high energy use is both critical and unavoidable, by providing a quick, personalised estimate of how these changes may impact an individual organisation’s costs.
By entering a few basic details from their electricity bill, users can receive a tailored indication of the potential cost increases linked to the new TNUoS structure. The aim is to cut through complexity and help business owners prepare for future financial planning, budgeting, and decision-making.
In September 2025, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) published its forecast for changes to the Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS) charges for the financial years 2026–2030. The updated charges are designed to raise approximately £3.5 billion to fund essential upgrades and expansion of the UK transmission network. As a result, businesses across all regions and sectors are expected to see a significant rise in their standing charges as a result of the revised TNUoS charge.
Agricultural businesses who are already operating on tight margins and are not currently recognised under the government’s Energy and Trade Intensive Industries (ETII) scheme will not be protected from this increase.
Beyond providing individual insights, the tool will also play a crucial role in strengthening the NFU’s policy and lobbying efforts. The anonymised and aggregated data collected such as farm type and indicative cost shifts will help the NFU present robust evidence to government as it presses for fairer outcomes for energy users.
“We know farmers and growers are already under pressure,” notes NFU Energy, Managing Director Tim Crocker. “This resource not only empowers them with information but also strengthens our voice in conversations with policymakers. The more farmers and agri-businesses who use the calculator, the stronger our case becomes.”
