UrbanChain has secured a new agreement with Shoreham Port, on the South Coast of England, and is now supplying electricity to the Port’s operations across its 115-acre estate, home to 175 tenants.

As part of its long-standing commitment to sustainability, Shoreham Port has appointed UrbanChain as its new renewable energy partner, supporting its ambition to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035.

The partnership builds on Shoreham Port’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation.  The Port is investing in a broad programme of energy infrastructure, including onsite solar generation, wind power, battery storage and the electrification of its cranes and HGV fleet.

As demand evolves, the agreement provides a more flexible and transparent approach to energy management, helping the Port integrate increasing levels of renewable generation, energy storage and electrified operations into a coordinated energy strategy. The Port typically records 600 commercial ship calls and handles around 1.5 million tonnes of cargo each year.

Ports are playing an increasingly important role in the UK’s energy transition, serving as hubs for clean energy projects, electrified transport and low-carbon industrial activity, as well as possessing significant land and resource assets.

Beyond energy supply, the agreement establishes a foundation for a wider collaboration that has the potential to see Shoreham Port optimise the value of its renewable generation and battery assets, participate in flexibility markets and further integrate clean energy across its estate. The Port currently consumes and generates approximately 1,000 MWh per year.

The longer-term vision is to create a more interconnected energy ecosystem across the Port estate, enabling Shoreham Port to make the most of its renewable generation while supporting the decarbonisation of operations and future growth in electricity demand.

Brian Rousell, Director of Engineering & Environment at Shoreham Port, said, “We have an ambitious target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2035 through extensive electrification of our operations including mobile machinery and road-going HGVs. We are looking forward to working with UrbanChain to achieve this in an environmentally and economically sustainable way for the long-term future of the Port.”

Sarah Espir, Partner Account Executive at UrbanChain, said, “Ports are critical to both the UK’s economy and its energy transition. Shoreham Port has a clear vision for how its energy infrastructure will evolve over the coming years, from renewable generation and battery storage through to fleet electrification. This partnership is about creating the foundations for a smarter and more connected energy ecosystem, helping Shoreham Port unlock greater value from its assets while supporting its long-term decarbonisation ambitions.”

UrbanChain is an Ofgem-licensed electricity supplier operating private energy markets that connect electricity consumers more directly with renewable generation. Its platform provides clearer visibility over energy provenance while helping organisations align energy procurement with wider sustainability objectives.
