UK distribution network operators (DNOs) have reiterated their collective commitment to enabling local flexibility markets, or smart grids, as part of a roadmap published by the Energy Networks Association.
The document outlines that the transition to smart networks could take around a decade, but plots a route map and timetable from now until 2030.
The report, which highlights innovation trials undertaken by network operators, also indicates that the sector will address one of the biggest challenges faced by firms wishing to connect assets to provide demand-side response.
As part of the connections process, DNOs have to make a request for a Statement of Works from National Grid regarding the impact of generation connecting to the local network can have on the national transmission system.
High volumes connecting to the distribution system in recent years mean that is not a fast process, creating uncertainty and frustration for firms waiting for their connection offer and its terms.
The report details how several DNOs have trialled new approaches to connections, leading to better information and faster offers. Taking the lessons from these projects, the ENA said it will now table a code modification in January that will apply to connections across the UK.
The ENA said the modification aimed to ensure swifter, more cost-reflective connections that crucially, deliver consistency across all DNOs.
