SmartestEnergy is celebrating 25 years helping Britain’s businesses and independent generators navigate the energy transition. SmartestEnergy’s puts its success over the last 25 years down to its focus on its people, centred around a core value of ‘one team, one future’, and an ongoing commitment to innovate which has laid the foundation for ambitious global expansion plans.
Establishment in 2000, SmartestEnergy has grown from 20 employees to 800+ globally across the UK, US and Australia.
- The company currently holds 10% of the UK’s energy market share across commercial and industrial (C&I) businesses and 9% share of renewable independent PPA market.
- In the UK it’s the third largest C&I business supplier by volume and ranks 4th in the overall non-domestic market.
From the first renewable generation customer joining in 2001, to entering the C&I supply market in 2008 and the SME market in 2019, plus global expansion into the US and Australia in 2019 and 2020 respectively. This is balanced by innovation based on customer needs, leading to SmartestEnergy launching its first certified 100% Renewable Supply products for C&I customers in 2015; Traceable Renewable Supply in 2024; and building out its flexibility portfolio with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) deals in the UK and Australia this year.
Robert Groves, CEO at SmartestEnergy, said, “Our business success since 2000 can be directly attributed to our people, who continue to have a dedicated focus on nurturing an inclusive environment, strong leadership and brilliant relationships with our customers and partners. Leadership is democratised across the business globally, so everyone plays a part in building a workplace they want to be part of; our employees are empowered with the tools to develop their career and shape our ongoing future success.”
The company actively develops and implements solutions to enable effective in-the-moment learning, including its “Get Smart” platform for internal use, which provides a central, easily accessible hub for development resources. The supportive employee experience has led to strong benefits for the customer, with an 8.1 customer satisfaction score; a Net Promoter Score of +31 for UK C&I business electricity supply customers; and a 4.3 out of 5 Trustpilot rating for SME supply customers.
SmartestEnergy is also committed to inclusion across the energy sector through its partnership with the Women Utilities Network (WUN), aligning with its objective to provide a platform for the energy industry to network and collaborate on reaching the UK’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050.
Looking forward, SmartestEnergy sees its integrated model, offering strong retail, trading and generation capabilities globally, its position as a Marubeni-backed company and the partnerships this enables to accelerate entry into new geographies as the building blocks for future growth.
Groves continues, “Over the last 25 years at SmartestEnergy, our asset-light integrated model, along with independence and diversity in our renewable and flexible asset portfolio has enabled us to scale with ease. For the business to continue achieving its objectives around building an energy future that works for everyone globally, we are now focused on international expansion. We are proud to have spent the last 25 years supporting businesses on their net zero journey, and are excited to continue playing a role in helping our customers and partners navigate the energy transition with confidence and clarity.”
