Surrey County Council has introduced a new programme, in partnership with Kerbo Charge, offering pavement gullies to accommodate EV charging cables.
The gullies were initially trialled in 2024 and, following a successful application for funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) Electric Vehicles Pavement Channel Grant, they are now being offered to all eligible Surrey residents.
These gullies are designed to provide space for cables running from homes to charge EVs parked on the street, with a zip-style lid closing over them to prevent trip hazards.
Residents who are interested need to complete an initial assessment with Kerbo Charge, and can then apply via the Surrey County Council website, paying a fee of £499 – reduced from £1,000 due to the grant support.
Michael Goulden, co-founder at Kerbo Charge, said, “We’re delighted to see over 100 applications in the first 24 hours of the scheme opening – this is simply about offering more choice to residents about how they charge their car and removing barriers to EV adoption.
“We’re looking forward to seeing lots of residents making the move from petrol/diesel to electric in the months ahead.”
Matt Furniss, cabinet member for highways, transport and economic growth at Surrey County Council, said, “EV charging needs to be accessible for all Surrey residents, not just those with a driveway.
“I’m delighted we’ve been able to launch this scheme to help people access home charging for their EVs.
“Alongside the 500 on-street EV charge points we’ve installed across Surrey, we’re making EV ownership a real option for more people – helping to make Surrey a greener, cleaner place.”
